China’s only film import and distribution company will soon have company in the movie distribution arena, government owned China Film Group. China National Culture & Art Corporation (CNCAC), also government owned recently received China’s second film import and distribution license. Chris Lee, former head of Columbia TriStar, has been appointed president of the CNCAC. His resume includes involvement in the production of box office bangers like “Superman Returns,” “Jerry Maguire,” “As Good As It Gets” and “Philadelphia” along with other less publicized projects. During a gathering in Hong Kong, Xu e Qiliang, senior member of the Ministry of Publicity stated,
“We’re very happy we can open a new chapter for the industry. I hope in the future there will be more cultural exchange between the United States and China…We can enhance the position of Chinese movies in the U.S. market.
