On April 1st, MGM announced a new Pink Panther project headed by ‘Simpsons’ director, David Silverman. This version of “The Pink Panther” will be a hybrid animation/live-action film.. The Pink Panther originated 50 year ago in the form of a cartoon and has since been remixed several times for the big screen. Other film versions of “The Pink Panther” include,
“Five films with Peter Sellers (including a 6th after his death with unused footage and stand-ins to help complete it), one with Alan Arkin, two one-offs with Roger Moore and Roberto Begnini and a rebooted series in the aughts with Steve Martin. Adjusted for inflation, the movies made a collected $875 million worldwide.” (Indiewire.com)
Unlike previous versions, the pink feline, rather than Inspector Clouseau, will be the main character. MGM hopes an action packed movie coupled with the direction of a box officer hitmaker coupled with will enable them to reach a whole new generation of moviegoers. In a press conference MGM president Jonathan Glickman states,
“We are incredibly proud to re-introduce the Pink Panther to a brand new generation in such a fresh way. Even more exciting is the chance to work again with our dear friends Walter Mirisch and Julie Andrews, as well as the talented David Silverman, whose enthusiasm convinced us to ‘Think Pink!’” (Indiewire.com)
